Shamsud-Din Jabbar's Lone Act of Terrorism in New Orleans Kills 14, Injures 35, Inspired by Islamic State
Jan 2, 2025, 06:03 PM
The FBI has determined that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Texas, acted alone in a truck attack in New Orleans that resulted in 15 total deaths, including Jabbar himself, and injured 35 others. The attack, which took place on Bourbon Street during New Year's celebrations, was labeled an 'act of terrorism' by the FBI. Jabbar, who was fatally shot by police during the incident, had posted five videos on Facebook hours before the attack, expressing his allegiance to the Islamic State group and his intent to kill. He originally planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned that media coverage would not focus on the 'war between the believers and the disbelievers.' The FBI found no evidence of accomplices after reviewing surveillance footage and conducting numerous interviews. Additionally, Jabbar had placed two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in cooler boxes in the French Quarter before the attack. The agency also clarified that there is no definitive link between this attack and a separate incident involving a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas.
