Iran and Hamas Deny New York Times Report Alleging Iran's Foreknowledge of October 7 Attack
Oct 12, 2024, 09:18 PM
Iran has denied reports from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal alleging that it had prior knowledge of Hamas's surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Iran's representative to the United Nations responded to questions from these outlets, stating that Hamas officials in Doha also confirmed they planned the operation independently without Iran's involvement. Despite Iran's denial, Israeli authorities reportedly found evidence from Hamas contradicting earlier assessments by U.S. intelligence officials. In February, the Director of National Intelligence's threat assessment stated that Iranian leaders did not orchestrate or have foreknowledge of the Hamas attack. However, The New York Times claims to have documented evidence of Iran-Hamas planning conversations, challenging the U.S. intelligence position.
