Sarkozy Sentenced to One Year Under Electronic Monitoring After Corruption Conviction Upheld
Dec 18, 2024, 03:30 PM
France's highest court, the Court of Cassation, has definitively upheld the conviction of former President Nicolas Sarkozy for corruption and influence peddling in the 'Affaire Paul Bismuth.' Sarkozy has been sentenced to three years in prison, with one year to be served under electronic monitoring, making him the first former French president to receive such a sentence. He is also prohibited from holding public office for three years. He was found guilty of attempting to bribe a judge and influence peddling to obtain confidential information about an investigation into his campaign finances. Sarkozy plans to appeal the decision to the European Court of Human Rights.
