VisitFinland Detains Russian Tanker 'Eagle S' Over Suspected Sabotage of Estlink 2 Power Cable to Estonia
Dec 26, 2024, 03:06 PM
Finnish authorities are investigating the suspected sabotage of the Estlink 2 undersea power cable connecting Finland and Estonia, following a sudden outage on December 25. The Finnish police, border guard, and army helicopters were involved in boarding and detaining the oil tanker 'Eagle S', linked to Russia's 'shadow fleet', which is suspected of causing the damage. The ship was traveling from Russia to Egypt and significantly slowed down while passing over the cable area, leading to suspicions that its anchor may have damaged the cable. Finnish officials have opened an investigation into the incident, considering charges of aggravated criminal damage and aggravated sanctions violation. Additionally, four data cables between Finland and Estonia were also damaged. Repairing the power cable could take up to five months.
