14 Attorneys General Sue TikTok, Calling It 'Digital Nicotine' Harming Children's Mental Health
Oct 8, 2024, 03:33 PM
On Tuesday, a bipartisan group of 14 attorneys general from more than a dozen U.S. states and the District of Columbia filed lawsuits against TikTok, alleging that the social media platform is harming young people's mental health by designing an addictive app and misrepresenting its commitment to safety. The lawsuits claim that TikTok exploits young users through addictive features that keep them hooked, fueling issues such as anxiety, sleep loss, and body image concerns. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb referred to the app as 'digital nicotine.' The states involved include California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. TikTok is also accused of collecting data from children without consent.
