BetterHelp, an online therapy provider, has agreed to pay $7.8 million in a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over allegations of mishandling and sharing customers' health data for advertising purposes. The settlement affects approximately 800,000 users who signed up and paid for services through various BetterHelp platforms including MyTherapist, Teen Counseling, Faithful Counseling, Pride Counseling, iCounseling, Regain, and Terappeuta between August 1, 2017, and December 31, 2020. Customers affected by this privacy breach are beginning to receive notices about refunds from the settlement, amounting to about $10 per customer.
