Sudan Dam Collapse in Red Sea State Kills 60, Destroys 20 Villages
Aug 26, 2024, 02:01 PM
A dam collapse in eastern Sudan's Red Sea state has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis. The collapse, triggered by heavy rainfall, has led to conflicting reports regarding the death toll. While the Sudanese health ministry initially reported at least 60 fatalities, the United Nations, citing local officials, stated that at least 30 people have died, with fears that the number could be much higher. The health ministry later reported that at least 132 people were killed. Additionally, four people were confirmed dead by floodwaters after the Arbaat Dam collapsed. Dozens of people are reported missing, and the disaster has destroyed or damaged homes in 20 villages, affecting around 50,000 residents. This catastrophe compounds the challenges faced by Sudan, which is already grappling with a civil war that has lasted over 16 months.
