Sudan Dam Collapse Kills 60, Destroys Homes of 50,000
Aug 26, 2024, 07:24 PM
Heavy rains in Sudan's Red Sea State have led to the collapse of the Arbaat Dam, located 40 km north of Port Sudan. The dam's failure has resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people, with the United Nations warning that the death toll could be much higher, potentially reaching 132. The disaster has also left dozens missing and has destroyed or damaged the homes of approximately 50,000 people, affecting at least 20 villages. The region, already struggling with the impacts of a prolonged civil war, faces further devastation as the dam was a crucial source of drinking water for the city of Port Sudan.
