Study Shows Vaccination Reduces Long Covid Risk by 70% Through Delta and Omicron Variants

A large study has shown that vaccination significantly reduces the risk of developing long Covid. The research, which traced cases through the Delta and Omicron variants, found that vaccination cuts the risk of long Covid by approximately 70%. The study analyzed data from 441,583 individuals with SARS-CoV-2 and 4,748,504 noninfected controls. It was observed that the chances of getting long Covid drop from 8-10% in unvaccinated individuals to 3-5% in vaccinated individuals. The lowest rate of long Covid, 3.5%, was among vaccinated people infected between mid-December 2021 and January 2022. The study also determined that 70% of the reduction in long Covid cases was due to vaccination, while 30% was attributed to changes in the virus itself. Additionally, vaccination not only lowers the risk of long Covid but also decreases the risk of serious complications. In the first two years of the pandemic, the rate of long Covid was starkly lower among people who were vaccinated.
