South Korea's Ruling Party Backs Second Impeachment Motion Against President Yoon Over Martial Law
Dec 13, 2024, 08:47 PM
South Korea's six opposition parties have submitted a second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol over his controversial declaration of martial law. The impeachment vote is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, in the National Assembly. The likelihood of its passage has increased as at least seven members of the ruling conservative People Power Party have indicated they will support it. The leader of the ruling party stated there is 'no other way' but to impeach President Yoon following the short-lived martial law declaration, which was heavily criticized and retracted shortly after being announced. With President Yoon's approval rating plummeting to 11%, the impeachment motion requires a two-thirds majority in the 300-seat assembly. The first impeachment attempt was scrapped last Saturday due to insufficient support, but growing backing within the ruling party suggests the motion may succeed this time.
