Official announcement by South Korean National Assembly
South Korean Parliament to Vote on Yoon's Second Impeachment Over Martial Law
Dec 13, 2024, 03:33 AM
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing a second impeachment motion in the National Assembly due to his brief declaration of martial law on December 3, which was rescinded after six hours. This move has led to widespread political turmoil and calls for his resignation. The opposition parties, controlling a majority in the single-chamber parliament, have introduced another impeachment bill, set to be voted on at 5 p.m. local time on Saturday. They need at least eight members from Yoon's ruling People Power Party (PPP) to join them to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority for the impeachment to pass. President Yoon has vowed to 'fight to the end,' accusing the opposition of paralyzing government functions and questioning the integrity of the April parliamentary election due to alleged North Korean hacking. His approval ratings have plummeted to an all-time low of 11%, with 75% of the public supporting his impeachment according to recent polls. The impeachment, if passed, would suspend Yoon from office pending a decision by the Constitutional Court, which could take up to six months to decide whether to remove him permanently or reinstate him. Meanwhile, the police are reportedly considering an arrest warrant for Yoon.
