South Korea's Parliament Votes on President Yoon's Impeachment Amid Ruling Party Boycott
Dec 7, 2024, 09:41 AM
South Korea's parliament has initiated a vote on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his failed attempt to impose martial law. The ruling People Power Party (PPP) has boycotted the vote, with nearly all its lawmakers leaving the chamber, effectively ensuring the motion will fail due to lack of quorum. The Democratic Party has urged the ruling party members to return for the vote, but most have refused. Outside the parliament, tens of thousands of protesters have gathered, demanding the president's resignation. The impeachment motion is expected to fall short of the required 200 votes, as the ruling party's boycott has left insufficient members to pass the motion. Only two members of the PPP remained in parliament for the vote.
