ICJ President Nawaf Salam Named Lebanon's Prime Minister in Setback to Hezbollah

Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice and former Lebanese ambassador to the United Nations, has been appointed as Lebanon's new Prime Minister, succeeding Najib Mikati, after securing the support of at least 84 lawmakers in the 128-seat parliament. President Joseph Aoun officially designated Salam to form a new government, reflecting a shift in the country's political landscape and dealing a setback to Hezbollah, which had supported Mikati's continuation. Salam, considered reform-minded and unaligned with any Lebanese political party, is seen by many as bringing hope for change. In his first speech as Prime Minister-designate, he promised to initiate a 'new chapter' for Lebanon rooted in justice, security, and progress. He pledged to rebuild the economy, combat corruption, and extend state authority over all Lebanese territories. Salam also emphasized the importance of implementing the Taif Agreement and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, calling for Israel to withdraw from all occupied Lebanese lands. He committed to achieving justice for the victims of the Beirut port explosion and to rebuilding villages destroyed by recent Israeli aggression. Salam extended his hand to all political factions, emphasizing unity and cooperation to address the country's challenges.
