TSMC Starts Mass Production of Logic Chips for Sony, Denso at Kumamoto Plant
Dec 27, 2024, 08:07 AM
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has commenced mass production at its first factory in Japan, located in Kumamoto Prefecture. The facility, operated by TSMC's subsidiary Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), is focused on producing logic chips using 12 to 28 nanometer process technologies. These chips are intended for use in automobiles and image sensors, serving customers such as Sony Group Corp. and Denso Corp. The Japanese government has provided over 1 trillion yen in subsidies to support this initiative, reflecting its commitment to bolstering domestic chip production amidst geopolitical tensions with Taiwan. The Kumamoto plant marks a significant step in Japan's efforts to strengthen its semiconductor supply chain and enhance economic security.
