IDF Confirms 21-Year-Old American-Israeli Capt. Omer Neutra Killed by Hamas on Oct. 7; Body Held in Gaza

Israel's Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed that Captain Omer Maxim Neutra, a 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier originally from New York, was killed by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Neutra was a lone soldier serving as a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade's 77th Battalion. His tank was disabled and ambushed near Nir Oz during the attack. Initially believed to have been held captive in Gaza, new intelligence indicates he was killed during the assault, and his body has been held by Hamas in Gaza for over 14 months. His parents, Orna and Ronen, had campaigned tirelessly for his release, hoping he was still alive. Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have expressed condolences and are calling for his body to be returned for proper burial.
