A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near Coalcomán, Michoacán, at 2:32 am on January 12, 2025, triggering seismic alerts in Mexico City at 2:35 am. The quake was felt in the capital, prompting residents to evacuate buildings despite the early hour. Preliminary reports from the Servicio Sismológico Nacional indicated the epicenter was 29 kilometers southwest of Coalcomán at a depth of 10 kilometers, later updated to 47 kilometers southwest and a depth of 30 kilometers.
