A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the southwestern region of Mexico, with its epicenter located 29 kilometers southwest of Coalcomán, Michoacán. The earthquake occurred at 2:32:50 a.m. local time on January 12, 2025, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The seismic event triggered the earthquake alert system in Mexico City, prompting the activation of civil protection protocols. No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been received, and representatives from the National Emergency Committee have initiated review protocols. The earthquake was felt moderately to strongly in Manzanillo, Colima, and lightly in several other regions including Apatzingán, Uruapan, and Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, as well as in parts of Jalisco and Nayarit. By 3:00 a.m., 37 aftershocks had been recorded, with the largest being a magnitude 4.0. A subsequent earthquake of magnitude 5.1 was also reported near the original epicenter. By 5:00 a.m., a total of 163 aftershocks were recorded, with no damage or casualties reported.
