Cyclone Chido Kills at Least 14 in Mayotte; Death Toll Could Reach Thousands
Dec 15, 2024, 11:02 AM
Cyclone Chido has caused devastating damage in Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, resulting in at least 14 deaths and more than 250 injuries. With wind speeds exceeding 220 km/h, the cyclone, described as exceptionally powerful and the most virulent since 1934, has left thousands without power and caused enormous material damage, including mudslides that have hampered rescue efforts. The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, fears that the death toll could be heavy, describing the situation as 'dramatic'. The prefect of Mayotte expressed fears that the death toll could reach several hundred, possibly approaching a thousand or even a few thousand. The cyclone devastated shantytowns.
