U.S. and Germany Pledge Over $700 Million to World Bank's Pandemic Fund
Jul 24, 2024, 12:10 PM
The U.S. has pledged $667 million to the World Bank's Pandemic Fund, aimed at preventing pandemics and preparing countries to deal with them. This pledge constitutes one-third of the fund's latest $2 billion direct pledge goal. The U.S. Treasury will seek annual appropriations from Congress for the pandemic fund pledge over several fiscal years. Additionally, Germany has contributed $54 million to the fund, bringing the total contributions to over $700 million. Key leaders, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, WHO's Dr. Tedros, and World Bank's Axel van Trotsenburg, are expected to speak at a live event in Rio de Janeiro to discuss the importance of pandemic preparedness. The event is part of the G20's Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting.
