Senate Majority Leader Schumer Calls for Robin Radar Deployment to Track Drones in NY, NJ
Dec 15, 2024, 09:26 PM
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, is urging the federal government to deploy advanced drone-tracking technology, including the Robin radar system, in response to weeks of mysterious drone sightings over New York and New Jersey. The technology aims to identify and track drones back to their landing spots, addressing public concerns over the lack of clear explanations and action from federal authorities. Schumer's call comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has the power to 'incapacitate' drones, but needs expanded authority, according to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The drones have been spotted near sensitive locations like the Picatinny Arsenal and Trump's golf course in Bedminster, prompting calls for better surveillance and detection systems. Governor Kathy Hochul has also announced that the federal government will deploy a state-of-the-art drone detection system to New York to support investigations into these incidents. Operators of drones must be FAA certified.
