Schumer Urges DHS to Deploy Advanced Tech Against Mysterious Drones in NY, NJ
Dec 16, 2024, 04:00 AM
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat and the Senate Majority Leader, is urging the Department of Homeland Security to deploy advanced drone-tracking technology to address the issue of drones buzzing over parts of New York and New Jersey. This call comes after weeks of public concern and confusion regarding the mysterious drone activity. Schumer's proposal includes using recently declassified radar technology to differentiate drones from other flying objects, track their electronic registration, and trace them back to their landing spots. The drones have been spotted near sensitive locations like the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster, prompting national security concerns. Although there is no evidence of foreign interference, the lack of clear identification of the operators has led to frustration among officials and residents. Governor Kathy Hochul has confirmed that a drone detection system will be deployed to support investigations by state and federal law enforcement. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use, but operators must be FAA certified.
