SAG-AFTRA Calls Strike Against Major Video Game Companies Over AI Protections Starting July 26
Jul 25, 2024, 07:27 PM
SAG-AFTRA, the union representing video game performers, has called a strike effective July 26 at 12:01 a.m. after more than a year and a half of stalled negotiations with major video game companies. The strike primarily concerns protections against artificial intelligence (AI) and aims to secure better wages and working conditions for voice actors and performers within the gaming industry. Companies affected by the strike include Activision, Disney, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Warner Bros., Insomniac, and Take-Two. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher stated, 'We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members.' Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland has been given the power to call the strike. This strike marks the second time in a decade that video game performers have taken such action.
