'Alice,' which aired from 1976 to 1986, was set in Phoenix and featured Lavin as a widowed mother working as a paper-hat-wearing waitress in a roadside diner. She became a working-class icon and a role model for working mothers. Lavin was also an advocate for women's rights, marching in support of the Equal Rights Amendment and inspiring women with her character's independence and resilience.
