US and 34 Countries Adopt Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism Amid Rising Threats Since October 7 Attack
Jul 17, 2024, 03:36 PM
The United States, along with 34 other countries and international organizations, has adopted the Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism. This initiative, announced by the U.S. State Department's Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, aims to address the rising tide of antisemitism worldwide. The guidelines, informed by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other major Jewish organizations, include best practices for governments to understand and combat various manifestations of antisemitism. The legally non-binding International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism is a key component of these guidelines. The announcement coincides with the 30th anniversary of the AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires, where leaders from the J7—a global task force of major Jewish organizations—gathered to honor the victims and discuss new data on antisemitic attitudes. U.S. Senators and Representatives have expressed their support for the guidelines, emphasizing the importance of education and a united global effort to protect Jewish communities. The rise in antisemitic behavior since the October 7 attack on Israel has been particularly alarming, highlighting the need for these new guidelines. Additionally, representatives from Agudath Israel of America have been actively involved in discussions to combat hate in all its forms.
