Adass Israel Synagogue Attack Declared Terrorism; Australian PM Launches Antisemitism Task Force
Dec 9, 2024, 12:15 AM
On December 7, 2024, an arson attack was carried out on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea, Melbourne, causing extensive damage and injuring two people. The attack occurred while several worshippers were inside the synagogue. Police have declared the incident a likely terrorist attack and are searching for three suspects believed to be responsible. Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as an 'act of terrorism' and announced the establishment of a federal police antisemitism task force. The Jewish community has expressed deep concern over the rise in antisemitic incidents in Australia since October 7, 2023, and held a rally to stand against antisemitism. The investigation into the fire has been transferred to a joint counter-terrorism team, including the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police, and ASIO. The Adass Israel Synagogue has launched a fundraising campaign to rebuild and enhance security measures.
