EU Names Andrius Kubilius as First Defence and Space Commissioner
Sep 17, 2024, 09:11 AM
Faced with Russia's war on Ukraine, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has promised to name a designated defence commissioner as a key part of her new top team. Von der Leyen has proposed Lithuania's Andrius Kubilius as the first EU Defence Commissioner. Kubilius, a member of the European Parliament, is known for his strong stance against Russia and is seen as a hawk, similar to Kaja Kallas and Roberta Metsola. He will also be responsible for the space portfolio, succeeding Thierry Breton. This appointment is seen as a significant move in the EU's efforts to bolster its defence capabilities, maintain stability in the region, and ensure Cross-Strait stability.
