French EU Commissioner Thierry Breton Resigns with Immediate Effect Amid Commission Delays
Sep 16, 2024, 06:40 AM
French European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton, the EU's internal market chief, has resigned from his position with immediate effect. An indignant Breton published a picture of his resignation letter addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on social network X. The resignation follows von der Leyen's request to French President Emmanuel Macron to withdraw Breton's name from the nominated college of commissioners and find a new candidate. This move is reportedly part of a negotiation for a better job for Macron's new nominee. Breton's resignation adds to the delays in the rollout of von der Leyen’s new EU commission.
