David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper Win 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold2
Oct 9, 2024, 11:34 AM
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper for their groundbreaking work in protein science. David Baker, from the University of Washington, received half of the prize for his contributions to computational protein design, while Demis Hassabis and John Jumper from DeepMind shared the other half for their advancements in protein structure prediction using artificial intelligence. Hassabis and Jumper's work with AlphaFold2, an AI model developed in 2020, has revolutionized the field by predicting the structure of almost all known proteins, a task that previously took years and now takes just minutes. Baker's laboratory has produced new kinds of proteins, including nanomaterials, showcasing the potential of computational tools in biology and drug discovery.
