Ukraine Captures Sudzha, 1,100 Sq Km in Kursk Offensive
Aug 16, 2024, 11:00 PM
Ukraine has launched a significant military operation in Russia's Kursk region, marking the largest foreign incursion on Russian soil since World War II. Ukrainian forces have reportedly captured over 1,100 square kilometers of territory, including the strategic town of Sudzha, and have accepted the surrender of a large group of Russian soldiers. The operation, which began on August 6, has seen Ukrainian troops advance up to 35 kilometers into Russian territory and take control of 82 settlements. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the incursion aims to pressure Russia into negotiating fair peace talks. In response, Russia has redeployed several thousand troops from occupied Ukraine to defend its territory in Kursk. The Ukrainian military has shared footage of the operation's early stages, showcasing the breaching of Russian defenses and the capture of prisoners. General Syrskyi reported on August 16 that Ukrainian forces are strengthening their positions, but there are concerns about Ukraine's ability to maintain control over the captured areas.
