Brazil Acquires 9.5 Million Doses of Dengue Vaccine for 2025, Establishes COE Amid Rising Cases and Serotype 3 Concerns
Jan 9, 2025, 04:09 PM
The Brazilian Ministry of Health has taken multiple steps to address the rising threat of dengue and other arboviruses in 2025. The ministry announced the acquisition of 9.5 million doses of dengue vaccine for the year, with 5.5 million doses already distributed to states and the Federal District. The vaccination strategy focuses on children and adolescents aged 10 to 14 years. Additionally, the ministry has established a Center of Emergency Operations (COE) for Dengue and other Arboviruses to enhance monitoring and response strategies. This initiative is part of a broader plan to mitigate the impact of dengue, chikungunya, and zika, which includes the use of advanced technologies like the Wolbachia method, expanded to 40 cities, and the deployment of 150,000 larvicide-disseminating stations. The ministry also highlighted the return of the dengue serotype 3, which had not been predominant in Brazil since 2008, raising concerns due to the population's susceptibility. In 2024, Brazil recorded 6.6 million probable cases of dengue and 6,000 deaths, with the trend continuing into 2025, where 10,100 probable cases and 10 deaths under investigation were reported by early January. Six states, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Tocantins, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná, are expected to have higher incidences of dengue this year, influenced by the El Niño effect. São Paulo received an additional 100,000 doses of dengue vaccine, while 17 cities in the state declared a state of emergency due to the disease.
