World Health Organization's World Malaria Report 2024
WHO Reports 263 Million Malaria Cases in 2023, Urges Increased Efforts
Dec 11, 2024, 02:07 PM
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its latest World Malaria Report, highlighting a concerning trend in the global fight against malaria. In 2023, there were approximately 263 million cases of malaria worldwide, an increase of 11 million cases from the previous year. Despite this rise, the number of deaths from the disease has slightly decreased to around 590,000, though still near 600,000. The report notes that while progress has been made with 2.2 billion cases and 12.7 million deaths averted since 2000, the disease remains a significant threat, particularly in Africa. The WHO calls for increased efforts from affected countries and international donors to combat malaria, emphasizing that no one should die from this preventable and treatable disease. Notably, 25 of the 83 malaria-endemic countries now report fewer than 10 cases per year, indicating steady progress towards elimination in low-burden countries.
