U.S. Coast Guard Spots Chinese Warships in Bering Sea Near Alaska
Jul 11, 2024, 03:30 PM
The U.S. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Kimball (WMSL-756) on routine patrol in the Bering Sea spotted several Chinese military warships, including four PLAN vessels, approximately 124 miles north of Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, off the coast of Alaska. These vessels were within the U.S. exclusive economic zone but still in international waters. The incident occurred over the weekend and was confirmed by officials on Wednesday. This is not the first time Chinese naval ships have been observed near Alaska waters; similar encounters occurred in September 2022 and September 2021. The Chinese vessels responded to U.S. Coast Guard radio communication, stating their purpose was 'freedom of navigation operations'. The USCG released a photo of one of the vessels.
