Miyazaki Airport in southwest Japan was temporarily closed on October 2, 2024, after an unexploded U.S. bomb from World War II detonated near its runway. The explosion created a crater seven meters wide and one meter deep in the taxiway, leading to the cancellation of 87 flights. No injuries were reported. The airport, which was previously an imperial Japanese air force base, has had unexploded ordnance discovered in the past. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the explosion. The bomb weighed 227 kg.
