32-Year-Old José Augusto Mota da Silva Dies Awaiting Care at Rio's UPA Cidade de Deus
Dec 14, 2024, 05:12 PM
A 32-year-old man, José Augusto Mota da Silva, died while waiting for medical attention at the Cidade de Deus Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone on Friday night. José arrived at the unit lucid but in severe pain. He was classified for risk at 8:30 p.m., but shortly after, he lost consciousness. Despite being rushed to the Red Room for treatment, he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and could not be revived. Videos circulating on social media show José seated and apparently unconscious, with other patients complaining about the delay in his treatment. The Municipal Health Secretary, Daniel Soranz, described the incident as 'shocking' and announced that all health professionals on duty at the time would be dismissed and face an inquiry. An investigation has been opened by the UPA's coordination, utilizing security camera footage and medical records to clarify the circumstances of his death. The body was sent to the Forensic Medical Institute (IML) to determine the cause of death.
