Swiss Flight Attendant Dies After Emergency Landing in Graz, Austria Due to Smoke on December 23 Flight
Dec 31, 2024, 09:30 AM
A Swiss International Air Lines flight attendant has died following an emergency landing in Graz, Austria, due to smoke in the cabin. The incident occurred on a flight from Bucharest to Zurich on December 23, which was diverted to Graz after engine problems caused smoke to fill the cockpit and cabin. The flight attendant, who was one of two crew members hospitalized, passed away on December 30 while in intensive care. All 74 passengers on the Airbus A220-300 were safely evacuated after the landing, and 12 passengers received medical treatment. Swiss International Air Lines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague, with Swiss CEO Jens Fehlinger stating, 'We are devastated at our dear colleague's death. His loss has left us all in the deepest shock and grief. Our thoughts are with his family, whose pain we cannot imagine.' The public prosecutor's office in Graz has ordered a forensic examination of the attendant's body and appointed an aviation expert to investigate the cause of the accident. Swiss is also conducting an internal examination to clarify the causes of the smoke and its effects on passengers and crew, with initial findings pointing to a technical problem in one of the engines.
