Colombia and Panama Plan Legal Route for 500,000 Migrants Through Darien Gap Amid Criticism of Biden-Harris Policies
Sep 26, 2024, 01:35 PM
Colombia and Panama are planning to establish a legal and organized route through the Darien Gap, a jungle area that migrants cross to reach the United States. This initiative, announced by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, aims to manage the flow of migrants more effectively. In 2023, over 500,000 undocumented immigrants traversed the Darien Gap, which is equivalent to 12% of Panama's population. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino, who took office in July, has ordered the military to close the Darien Gap pathway to control the migration crisis. Mulino, who campaigned with the slogan 'Martinelli is Mulino,' highlighted the severe impact of mass migration on local communities and called for international support to address the crisis. He also criticized the Biden-Harris policies, stating they are destroying the traditional way of life in the region.
