Panama's New President Announces Crackdown on Illegal Immigration, Closing Darién Gap
Jul 2, 2024, 11:29 AM
Panama's new president, Jose Raul Mulino, has announced a crackdown on illegal immigration, vowing that Panama will no longer be a transit country for migrants. Mulino emphasized that each country must address its own migration issues and acknowledged the deep reasons for migration. As part of this initiative, Panama will close the notorious Darién Gap, a treacherous jungle passage used by migrants to reach the United States illegally. The Panamanian government has quickly signed an agreement with Washington to assist in this effort. Mulino took office on Monday.
