Mexican Committee Approves AMLO's Judicial Reform, Including Faceless Judges, in 22-17 Vote
Aug 27, 2024, 12:46 AM
A key congressional committee in Mexico has approved President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's controversial judicial reform plan, marking a significant step towards its implementation. The reform, which has been criticized by opponents for potentially undermining democracy, received approval from the Comisión de Puntos Constitucionales in the Cámara de Diputados with 22 votes in favor and 17 against. The proposal includes the introduction of 'faceless judges' to be elected by popular vote. Meanwhile, more than a thousand federal judges have formally requested intervention from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, expressing concerns over the judicial overhaul. Additionally, Manuel Velasco, a senator from the Partido Verde, stated that Morena and its allies are close to securing the three additional Senate votes needed for a qualified majority to pass the reform, with an agreement reportedly 99 percent complete.
