Missouri 2022 Abortion Ban Persists Amid Supreme Court Reversal and National Debate
Jun 9, 2024, 12:26 PM
Abortions in Missouri were almost entirely banned in 2022, but restrictions had been largely in place far earlier due to other laws. These laws will remain even if voters add abortion rights to the state constitution this fall. The former president has stated he would sign a national abortion ban, raising concerns about government control over women's bodies. Republicans, led by Donald Trump, are threatening access to abortion, contraception, and IVF, which is at odds with the majority of Americans. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have vowed to continue fighting to protect access to reproductive health care. Democratic-leaning doctors have become an organizing and political force against state abortion restrictions that began after the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022. The GOP/pro-life coalition is experiencing a backlash due to these abortion limits. Post-Dobbs, abortion bans have given abusers new power. Elizabeth Dias and Lisa Lehrer’s new book on how the Supreme Court took away federal abortion rights points to huge shocks to come.
