CBI Probes Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder Case; Sanjoy Roy Accused, 19 Arrested
Aug 16, 2024, 05:11 AM
The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata is at the center of a high-profile rape and murder case involving a woman resident doctor. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation, bringing the accused, Sanjoy Roy, to the CBI office and later for medical examinations. The CBI Special Crime Branch has summoned five doctors, including former MSVP Sanjay Vashisth, and other medical staff for interrogation. Additionally, four PGT doctors have been summoned for questioning. This case has sparked widespread protests among junior doctors and medical students across India, with demonstrations reported in Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram. Protesters are demanding justice for the victim and the implementation of a Central Protection Act for doctors. The Kolkata Police have also arrested 19 individuals, with 12 held for vandalism at the hospital.
