Youth's Death Amid Doctors' Strike Sparks Protests; Supreme Court Informed of 23 Deaths
Sep 9, 2024, 04:30 AM
The death of a youth at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital has sparked widespread protests and controversy. The youth's death occurred amid an ongoing doctors' strike, which began on August 9, following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the same hospital. The incident has led to massive demonstrations by various groups, including students, rickshaw pullers, and civil society members, demanding justice. TMC MP Jawhar Sircar resigned, citing the West Bengal government's mishandling of the public movement following the incident. The Supreme Court, led by CJI DY Chandrachud, is currently hearing the case and has directed the CBI to submit a fresh status report. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, informed the court that 23 people have died due to the doctors' strike. The court also urged protesting doctors to resume work by September 10, ensuring no adverse action will be taken against them. The protests have extended globally, with demonstrations held in over 130 cities across 25 countries.
