Mexico Readies for Trump's Deportations, Vows to Support 5 Million Undocumented Mexicans with Lawyers and Panic App

Mexico is preparing for potential mass deportations from the United States as Donald Trump is set to assume the presidency. Migrant shelters and the government of Mexico City are coordinating strategies to manage the impact of these deportations. The Mexican government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, has promised to defend Mexicans living in the U.S., particularly the 5 million undocumented Mexicans, and has taken steps to support them, including launching a panic app for those detained, hiring more than 2,600 lawyers, and nearly 2,200 consulate workers. Sheinbaum's foreign minister has visited every border state to prepare for the situation. Sheinbaum has emphasized that Mexico is not a colony or protectorate of any country and highlighted the crucial role Mexicans play in the U.S. economy. In 2024, Mexican migrants sent $65 billion in remittances to Mexico, representing a significant portion of the national economy. The president has also stated that Mexico will welcome back any deported citizens with open arms, while continuing to engage in dialogue with the Trump administration to maintain a good understanding, similar to that achieved during the tenure of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
