Verdict announced in Manhattan Supreme Court
Luigi Mangione Pleads Not Guilty to Murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
Dec 23, 2024, 03:17 PM
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old former Ivy League student, pleaded not guilty on Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court to an 11-count indictment, including first-degree murder and terrorism charges, in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione is accused of gunning down Thompson, a 50-year-old husband and father, on December 4 in Manhattan. Prosecutors allege that Mangione shot Thompson outside a hotel, leaving behind bullet casings engraved with messages. Mangione was arrested at a Pennsylvania rest stop and is currently held in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. His attorney argued that he is entitled to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence, expressing concerns about the public spectacle surrounding the case. The state charges carry a maximum penalty of life without parole, while federal charges could result in the death penalty.
