Russia Opposes European Peacekeeping Force in Ukraine, Criticizes Trump's Proposals
Dec 30, 2024, 10:50 AM
Russia has expressed opposition to the potential deployment of a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine, as stated by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This stance comes amid discussions by European and American leaders about post-conflict scenarios in Ukraine, following nearly three years of conflict. Lavrov criticized proposals from representatives of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, which include delaying Ukraine's NATO membership for 20 years and deploying a peacekeeping contingent composed of British and European forces. The idea of deploying European troops along the 1,000 km front line in Ukraine was discussed by French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in mid-December. The Kremlin has previously indicated that it is premature to discuss peacekeepers, reflecting ongoing tensions and differing views on peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
