Poland Begins $2.5 Billion 'Eastern Shield' Fortifications on Borders with Russia and Belarus
Nov 1, 2024, 10:46 AM
Poland has commenced the construction of the 'Eastern Shield' fortifications along its borders with Russia and Belarus, including the Kaliningrad exclave, as confirmed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This strategic initiative, developed by the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Polish Army, aims to establish a comprehensive defense line to deter potential aggression. The project includes the construction of 800 kilometers of ditches, minefields, anti-tank barriers, and surveillance systems, with an allocated budget of $2.5 billion. The Eastern Shield also features fortified barriers, forward bases, logistical hubs, and various types of natural obstacles. The initiative is a joint effort with Baltic partners, emphasizing NATO's eastern borders' security. The total length of the fortifications will be 700 km.
