Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker 'Eventin' Adrift Near Rügen With 99,000 Tons of Oil, No Spill Reported
Jan 10, 2025, 01:44 PM
A tanker named 'Eventin', part of Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet', is adrift and unable to maneuver in the Baltic Sea north of the German island of Rügen. The 274 meters long and 48 meters wide vessel, carrying approximately 99,000 tons of oil, was en route from Ust-Luga in Russia to Port Said in Egypt. The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency's multi-purpose vessel 'Arkona' and the emergency tug 'Bremen Fighter' are on site to prevent further hazards amid moderate to fresh wind conditions. Additionally, the tug 'Bremen' and a specialized team capable of establishing a towing connection have been mobilized. The ship, built in 2006 and registered under the Panamanian flag, is listed by Greenpeace as part of the Russian shadow fleet, which often consists of outdated vessels used to circumvent Western sanctions on oil transport due to the Ukraine conflict. No immediate danger to the environment has been reported, and no oil has spilled. The crew remains on board, with no need for evacuation.
