VisitRussian Shadow Fleet Tanker with 99,000 Tons of Oil Secured Off Rügen, No Immediate Danger
Jan 10, 2025, 02:30 PM
A tanker named Eventin, part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet used to circumvent Western sanctions, has become unmaneuverable and is drifting north of the German island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea. The vessel, built in 2006 and flying the Panamanian flag, was carrying approximately 99,000 tons of oil en route from Ust-Luga in Russia to Port Said in Egypt. The German maritime emergency response team has secured the tanker by establishing a towing connection to prevent it from running aground. There is no immediate danger to the environment or the crew, who remain on board. The cause of the tanker's inability to maneuver remains unclear, but efforts are underway to tow it to a safe location, either Rostock or Denmark, amid a looming storm in the area.
