The Russia-linked tanker Eagle S, seized by Finland on December 25 for damaging the Estlink-2 undersea cable, was found to be equipped with sophisticated Russian signals intelligence equipment. According to Lloyd's List, the tanker was used to monitor NATO naval ships and aircraft, effectively turning it into a 'spy ship' for Russia. The equipment on board, which was not typical for a merchant ship, consumed more power from the ship's generator, leading to repeated blackouts. The tanker, part of Russia's 'shadow fleet', was also involved in transporting sanctioned Russian oil.
