Venezuela Unilaterally Closes Border With Colombia Until January 13, Citing International Conspiracy
Jan 10, 2025, 12:09 PM
Venezuela has unilaterally closed its 2,219-kilometer border with Colombia and suspended flights between the two countries until January 13, citing an 'international conspiracy' to disrupt peace during President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration. The closure, which began at 5 a.m. on January 10, comes just hours before Maduro is set to be sworn in for a third term amid accusations of electoral fraud. Freddy Bernal, governor of the state of Táchira, announced the measures, stating they aim to counter plans to perturb the peace of Venezuelans, especially in the border region. Authorities have placed containers and reinforced military presence at key crossings, including the Simón Bolívar International Bridge and Paraguachón between Guajira and Maicao. The Colombian government confirmed the unilateral closure through diplomatic channels.
