VisitTSMC Begins Production of Apple A16 Chips at Phase 1 of Fab 21 in Arizona
Sep 17, 2024, 10:00 PM
TSMC has commenced production of Apple's A16 processors at its Arizona foundry, marking a significant milestone for both Apple and the US semiconductor industry. This development is part of the broader initiative under the CHIPS Act to bring chip manufacturing back to the United States. The A16 processors, which are two generations old, are being produced in small but notable quantities at Phase 1 of TSMC's Fab 21. The Arizona plant has achieved yields that are nearly on par with those in Taiwan, with expectations of reaching full yield parity soon. Additionally, Apple has locked in the initial production run for TSMC's cutting-edge 2nm chip technology, which is planned for the iPhone 17 Pro, potentially launching in 2025.
